2022 Magdalena Bay Conference Report

Oct 15, 2022 ~ Author Dan Moffat

We had a record number of SMA participants on this trip!  18 people (19 with Tom Moss). There was also a waiting list for this conference, but Mag Bay wisely limits the number of attendees.

As per usual, it was a great SMA Mag Bay group with lots of new friends being made and a fun time for all. New attendee Todd Moravitz  mentioned that the evening sessions were like attending interesting TED talks! Our thanks to Dani Vinn for a great job coordinating the AV for the talks!

We had a successful educational agenda as follows –
Dr. Stewart Turner – Ophthalmology for Surfers
Dr. Mark Henschke – LDL Latest Updates
Dr. Hearst Wellborn – Surfing Orthopedics
Dr. Mark Luoto – Lightning Strikes and Treatments
Kevin Smith (Rocket Scientist) – Ranch Access and Rockets
Dr. Mike Rowbotham – Long Covid
Dr. Norm Vinn – Selling a Medical Practice
Dani Vinn – SMA Update
Dr. Greg Pechia – Telemedicine
Dr. Doug Coward – Holistic Veterinary

The SMA Mag Bay 2022 Surf –

Rideable waves every day for this trip. Interesting, shorter period hurricane Frank swells. The first 3 days (Sun, Mon, Tues) were overhead fun at Campsites. Campsites is the crown jewel of Mag Bay. Campsites also broke but only occasionally on Wed and Thur. Friday was smaller. There is always Cuevas! Hearst Wellborn gets the participation award for most waves ridden with 3 go outs a day.  What a beast!

Tom Moss took an excellent SMA group shot at the Friday Kings View cocktail party.  He also has some good surf trip pictures. Tom is an excellent photographer (action shots of pigeons?) and will be contacting you with any action pictures he has of you. He has posted some pics on his Facebook page.  I have included a sample of his photos for you to check out.

The Fishing at SMA 2022 Mag Bay

Mark, Taylor, Eric, Luke, and Stewart did most of the fishing.  They said they pulled in 10 different types of fish until their reel arms got tired!  20+ fish per boat trip but that could be a “fish story”?  But we had fresh sushi every night and it was wonderful! Thank you! Thursday night was the full sushi dinner.

“State of the SMA” Discussions –

Dani Vinn led a great session updating our group on the current status of the SMA. Dani recently joined the SMA as a volunteer and is working with the newly crowned SMA Director – Deric Weiss. Welcome Deric!

Norm Vinn who is an “SMA Kahuna” brought a very relevant historical perspective on the SMA to our discussions. The SMA will be what each of us put into it. If you want to help, suggest you start by contacting Dani.

Great Mag Bay Staff! –

Thanks again to Esteban Warren (still tested positive on Saturday? – Get Well Soon!) and his outstanding on-site staff run by El Jefe Cruz. They keep making Mag Bay better each year. The coyotes only got one water bottle? Interesting people, wonderful food, great drinks/music and competitive Liar’s Dice made the evenings a lot of fun! Mag Bay is truly special.

Mag Bay weeks are coveted. I will ask Esteban to retain the first week of August for SMA Mag Bay 2023. Details to follow.

Cowabunga!
Dan

Rym Partridge eyes down the line at Campsites.
